Cyberspace Opportunities They considered themselves Yahoos Making millions of dollars in a cyberspace gold rush was the last thing on the minds of two Ph.D. candidates in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University in early 1994. David Filo and Jerry Yang were only trying to keep track of their favorite interests on the Internet, but in doing so, they created the equivalent of a phone directory for the World Wide Web. They say they've always considered themselves yahoos, so that's what they named their service.

service; they were a publisher, accepting advertising, and that was important news to

Spiders! When he's not flying his acrobatic plane or feeding his pet tarantula, Michael "Fuzzy" Mauldin works to make things easier to find on the Internet with a spider called Lycos, which he invented to roam the World Wide Web and bring back information. The Lycos spider is another in a long line of Internet search tools, which began with "Archie", the brainchild of a McGill student who was simply tired of trying to find things on the net. |
This is the first generation to grow up with the Internet the way the rest of us grew up with rock and roll and television. From the boardrooms of a high tech corporation in Vancouver to an island in Washington State, to the back streets of East Palo Alto, a new generation of kids is already creating Life on the Internet. The creation of the net has given to very different kids, from totally different backgrounds, and at various stages in their development, the ability to adapt existing technology to their own needs. They have grasped it and shaped it and accepted it as a normal addition to their lives. For them, this technology has always been here. Yet, like them, it's a creation that is still growing, still finding its own place. And, also like them, it seems more and more destined to mature into something worth knowing, something that can make a contribution, technology which will help secure a future for Life on the Internet. Twelve Years Old! Tom is the Director of Creative Development for MultiActive Technologies , a high tech company based in Vancouver. But this isn't his first job. At age twelve, just before he went to high school, he started his first software company, making and selling computer games. Shortly after that he spent three years with Apple Computer in California. Needless to add, in some circles Tom Williams is already considered a bit of a cyberspace curiosity.

And now this little jewel of a village on the Italian Riviera has a one-man Internet tourist bureau. But it's the food that has attracted lots of people to Paolo's website . They come from all over the world for Italian recipes, for advice on food and wine, and even to sign up for his week-long cooking course at the hotel.

Family Page In Crestwood, Kentucky, the Internet allowed Michele Petry to play fairy godmother. Local students wanted to turn their Cinderella story into a book. Michele had created a family page for her children on the World Wide Web, and knew that the University of Louisville could provide technical support.
